One, Rather Disassociated Cross
Just inside the eastern entrance to the Schnuck's "on the Hill" is the Cross from St. Aloysius Church. Assumedly, this was the primary one from behind the altar, though by the time I'd first walked into the place, the old building had been stripped to the studs. A large sign next to the piece only says that the Cross is on display at Schnuck's through August, as a gift from Scott Schnuck and Bellon Wrecking.
Whatever the positive motivations behind the move... this is one WEIRD sight. Yeesh.
That's just plain f-ed up!

Especially in light of the fact that St. Aloyisius was the "German" parish (vs "Italian" St. Ambrose). (A good friend grew up 2 blocks from St. Ambrose, but went to St. Al's. When I asked him why he didn't go to St. Ambrose, he replied, "because that was the Italian church".) All of the stained glass windows in St. Al's had German family names listed as benefactors.
I've always thought of the Arsenal store as Schnucks' attempt to be an Italian market - cannolis, Volpi salami, etc. I wonder how many of their Italian customers look at that cross and say, "What's that German thing doing in our store?"
That's been known for awhile as the "Catholic Schnucks." I haven't checked on this lately, but they did have a picture of Pope JPII behind the customer service desk and crucifixes hanging above each door entrance, including the ones going to the back room/behind the dairy cases.
They just did a renovation and have a TON more Italian food items available in the deli area.
