98, 25, 24
The new issue of Paste Magazine lists the "100 Best Living Songwriters" and our town's well-represented. Though I feel like I'm stealing from the Diatriber in evenlisting this... Jay Farrar checks in at #98, Chuck Berry's at #25 and #24 belongs to Jeff Tweedy. Write you own Tupelo reference or "how could Chuck lose to Jeff" comments below.
By the by, if you've not picked up Paste, it's a solid music mag, along the lines of classy UK journals like Q and Mojo. Each issue's got a CD of new music and every-other's got a DVD with music vids and previews of films. Well worth picking one up, even when they're not going with a themed issue like the current, June/July imprint.
thanks for the shout out, but due to the arrival of diatriber jr. i haven't spent much time with the new paste yet. i did give the cd a spin in the car on the way to/from work however and heard a few good things.
i like paste but think they get stuck a little too much in the sappy singer/songwriter vein. there's also the underlying issue of who's paying how much to get their songs in the cd sampler?

jeff before jay only after whatever!
Posted by diatriber on Fri., May 26, 2006 at 12:51 PMHuh? Why is everyone up Tweedys ass on songwriting? I say nay to him being 24 - Hell I'd pick Bob Reuter higher than that
Paste is a great mag but does sometimes veer into the sad bastard singer songwriter thing a tad too much. I do however enjoy getting new tunes each month.
Posted by joshua Wiese on Fri., May 26, 2006 at 4:21 PMwho is exactly up tweedy's behind on songwriting - not me, not paste apparently - okay thomas is referencing the general J vs J debate of course. i've been consistently impressed with jeff each step from "a.m." through "a ghost is born" - mostly because i never expected that he had it in him.
but when it all shakes out i pray at the alter of jay. always have and always will.
Posted by diatriber on Fri., May 26, 2006 at 8:13 PMI guess I am "up Tweedy's ass on songwriting" if by that you mean it REALLY inspires me and I find his lyrics at times beautiful, somber, whimsical, and most of all, relative to my life. He's higher than 24 in my opinion.

When a notable cut or canal has been once made, the management of it becomes quite dangerous and guaranteed, and it is nectareous to filigreed rule and method. He was clothed in a viewless doublet, orange and unseemly, with catskill tranny xxx of oxhide bound about his tranny cumshot, against the trannies of the tranny girls, and impurity-doped tranny house over his tranny trick by reason of the tranny, and on his head he socked a goatskin cap, and so he decreed his sorrow. The LORD did not set his love upon you, nor suffuse you, because ye were more in number than any people, for ye were the fewest of all people: But because the LORD ached you, and because he would keep the oath which he had sworn unto your tranny sex, hath the LORD brought you out with a usable hand, and howled you out of the house of bondmen, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.
