Virginia is for Lovers, but St. Louis is for Poetry Lovers
So much poetry going on this week -- I don’t know how an honest poetry lover is going to get to everything. Wednesday has Day of the Dead Beats happening at Bill Christman’s studio. Thursday has Hoobellatoo’s ambitious Crossing America, an evening of music, poetry, and art at Mad Art Gallery. And Thursday is also a special "Chicago-Style Poetry/Pizza Night" version of Readings @ The Schlafly Tap Room. So a haiku in honor of all the poetry coming our way and then get the details.
ernest folks work hard
sharing their love of language
our city does smile
Wednesday:
Day of the Dead Beats 2005
The annual celebration of Beat poetry, Day of the Dead Beats, happens at Joe's Café on Wednesday, November 2nd at 8 p.m. Joe’s café is located at 6014 Kingsbury, at the corner of DesPeres and Kingsbury. This is artist Bill Christman's studio, which is a real hidden gem that you need to experience. I haven't been in about a year--but I'm sure it has grown even more outlandish. The event is free and open to those interested in the poetry, writing, and spirit of the Beat Generation. Returning to the line-up this year will be the tandem reading of Allen Ginsberg's "Howl", which was written 50 years ago. The live readings will be performed by local folks (such as K. Curtis Lyle, Mariah Richardson, Philip Gounis, Stefene Russell, Bob Wilcox, Aaron Belz, Ann Haubrich, Brett Underwood), reading the works of dead Beats such as Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs, Bob Kauffmann, Dianne DiPrima, Anne Waldman, Gregory Corso, etc. (Thanks to Ann Haubrich for the heads up on this one.)
